You talkin’ to me?

Why yes, as a matter of fact.
Monkey decided this trip to Kentucky would be the perfect time to add to his vocabulary. I don’t know if it was having all the family around him, or maybe Princess was spending so much time with my mom that he was actually able to get a word in edgewise…
First, he’s pulling that cute little red suitcase down the hall and I asked him where sister was (Yes, we’re that southern that we occasionally say Sister instead of her name.) He turns around, looks at me and says: “Thithter?” I dropped my jaw and my suitcase on the floor. He just turns around and runs down the hall suitcase bouncing behind him.
Then, he and Nathan are tossing around a little stuffed football in our room and Monkey picks it up, turns around and says “foo-ball”. I thought Nathan was going to fall on the floor, I nearly fell off of the bed! Nathan grabs the ball and repeats “Football Monkey, Football”
I need to interject here that we’ve been teaching our kids ASL and the sign for please is basically a sweeping motion across the chest with one hand. Monkey’s version is a bit of a beating the chest sweep
Monkey apparently thinks Nathan is asking; “Do you want the football” He is beating himself across the chest and bobbing his head up and down so violently I thought his head was going to fly off his neck, and his sternum collapse from the pressure of his ‘pleases’.
Nathan gives in and tosses him the football while I’m in convulsions of laughter on the bed.
Then, Monkey walks across the room with the football and says again: “Foo-ball” First compound word is Football, my ex-football playing husband is in throes of parental ecstasy over this y’all.
Next:
We’re on the plane going home. Monkey and I are in row 6, Dad is behind me in row 7, Middle Brother is across the aisle next to Dad, and Youngest Brother is next to me across the aisle, Nathan is in front of Monkey in row 5, and Mom is with Princess in row 4.
I’m telling Monkey to look ‘outside’ and see the Mississippi river when he says “Ow-side”
At this point you have to imagine all of these adults in all 4 of these rows erupting in excited congratulations and cheers and say it again’s.
People, we’re on a plane just a hair and a half bigger than a crop duster. I thought we were going to rock the plane out of the sky.
So there, you have it. He is wordless no more, I just hope I don’t have to continue taking him on cross country treks to get him to talk more.

A Flower in Berea, Kentucky

* I have been a bad blog reader. I have 407 unread posts in my reader, I wasn’t able to spend any time on my computer in KY, we got home at midnight Monday night and I spent all day yesterday neck deep in laundry and doctor’s appointments for Monkey’s ears and grocery shopping. I will hit my reader when Monkey naps today. I can’t wait to catch up and see what all you clever people are up to! Smooches and Big XOXO Y’all. Sorry I have been so absent and I hope you’ve desperately been missing my comments ๐Ÿ™‚ XOXO!

  1. He’ so cute ๐Ÿ™‚
I am sure this won’t be the last of his words–it is baa-ball season and he’ll want a baaaat ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Berea is a beautiful little town…although tiny! I used to live there for a bit (like one semester actually). lol

  3. kentucky is so beautiful this time of year! And he is just adorable! I would be the one worried about the plane a rocking ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. He is just too cute.. and I love the picture.. I missed you that is for sure!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Welcome Home!

  5. how sweet is he???!!!???

We’re still waiting on Connor to start talking at almost 22 months old! He said his own weird words for things, or he says halves of words (ock=sock, uck=buckle or stuck, etc), then throw in a few simple words like hi, bye, no, dog, ball.

I’ll bet your heart just melted when you heard him spouting out new words!!!!

PS We aren’t southern anything here in WA, but my boys call Emily sister or sissy rather often…

  6. he’s just in time for foo-ball season! his daddy must be estatic!

my daughter did not speak for the longest time (aside from the mama, dada, mil(k).) then one day out the blue she said, “cho-co-ate” – i almost fell down.

  7. So so so cute!!!

Love the vocabulary story! And the flower in Berea is gorgeous!

We lived in KY in the 70’s, and I remember Berea!! Lovely place.

    Hope all is well.

    xoxo

  8. 407?!?!?! OUCH! I was at 187 after only about 36 hours away last weekend. It was surprisingly fast to catch up. I just couldn’t comment on every one.

The increasing vocabulary phase is just my favorite. I LOVE hearing the mispronounced words, the wrong words and the ever inquisitive approach they take to all things verbal now.

    KEEP BELIEVING

  9. I am SO glad I wasn’t on that plane! I’m terrified to fly, and I wouldn’t have appreciated all the back and forth stuff! Though, it IS adorable, and I would’ve gladly asked him to say it again…once we were safely on the ground.

  10. I have desprately missed you. Now that Monkey is talking, he can take care of your commenting for you.

What? He’s not typing yet? Not at all?

I don’t believe you. Tell you what, you let Monkey comment on my posts. I’m looking forward to what he has to say.

  11. I wonder why my feeder didn’t grab this. I was just stopping by, cause I knew you were back. You know the quickest way to a dad’s heart is to say football. My hubby had our son saying Irish in his first 10…and touchdown Irish by 16 months! I hope you are feeling better. I’ve missed ya!

  12. Glad you’re back! I love those first words. Of course, in a few months, you’ll be wishing he was silent again!
