One of the first cakes that Granny made for Nathan was her Sock It To Me Cake. I’m pretty sure he asked her to marry him after the first bite.
Granny would have turned 95 today.
Mary Cecil Trew {Granny}
April 18, 1920 – April 16, 2014
Granny was everyone’s Granny. Every single one of our friend’s who entered Granny’s house left a member of Granny’s family. There was always room for everyone at her table and in her heart. My middle brother went to A&M and he and his friends and roommates practically lived at Granny’s house. When Michael would bring food from Granny’s back to his dorm room; he’d have to lock his door to keep people out. They would literally storm his room to get some of her banana pudding or fried chicken. Granny was famous for her Banana Pudding, y’all. A recipe she never wrote the exact measurements too, much to our great dismay.
Granny is the one who sparked my love of cooking, and my passion for sharing food with those I love. Some of my fondest memories are of being in her kitchen standing at her side watching, learning, tasting. To this day I’ve never had a chicken fried steak that can come close to hers. Many of my favorite foods are a result of her influence: Italian Cream Cake, banana pudding, chicken salad, fritos, sock it to me cake and so many more.
Granny was the most stylish, sassiest, spunkiest lady and she and her friends were the epitome of the “Ladies who Lunch”. I am who I am, because of my Granny.
Nathan’s favorite cake that Granny made was her Sock It To Me cake – he requests it every Father’s Day and Birthday (it’s now been joined by the Texas Sheet Cake Cupcakes with Bourbon Glazed Pecans)
In honor of Granny’s birthday and to celebrate her life – Monkey and I made Granny’s Sock It To Me cake and shared it with our family and neighbors.
To make something with love, for those you love, to open your home, make space at your table, welcome all with laughter and love… that’s just one of Granny’s legacies.
One of the many that I intend to pass on to our kids. The importance of family and friends, the importance of living each moment to the fullest, living with an open heart, a giving spirit, and a smile for everyone.
One of Granny’s favorites, as every good southern lady knows – “You catch more flies with honey, than vinegar”
I miss my Granny every day, but her legacy, her stories, her lessons …. they live on.

Mary Cecil is my kind of lady; smart, strong and Southern! 😉 Have you thought to ask some of the families that knew her through the AgExt program for recipes she may have given them? I have found family recipes that way before. Might be worth a try…
Such a touching post! This cake looks out of this world good!
Thank you, Gaby <3 This cake never lasts more than an hour around here 🙂 As soon as people find out it's being made - they show up with their forks 😉
This cake brings back memories. Haven’t had one in ages but I probably won’t be able to say that for long!
Oh my goodness… I just stumbled on this while scrolling through Pinterest tonight and it made my heart sing! I think MY Granny probably made a Sock it to Me cake at least 2-3 times a month when I was younger. Seems like there was always one in the oven or about to be sliced…. Along with a poppyseed cake and banana pudding, of course!
Unfortunately, my Granny is in the advances stages of Alzheimer’s now, but she will be 95 next Thursday, on April 29th! Thanks for your timely post for bringing back a flood of great memories….. Now I know what I’ll be baking next week!
