Hey, y’all! My name is Genell and you can find me blogging at Nel’s Nook. I just moved from a busy city in Washington State to an incredibly small (think no stoplights!) town in rural southwestern Virginia. Come join me for all of my adventures in and outside of the kitchen as I figure out this country living thing!
A huge thank you to Rachel for inviting me to be a part of this year’s Handmade Holidays: Bake, Craft, Sew. I love giving homemade gifts and there is nothing better than a whole month of ideas!
My favorite gifts to give usually come out of my kitchen. I try to be crafty but usually I end up gluing my fingers together… I am just that clumsy! This year I wanted to do something a little out of the box with the treats I give for the holidays. Now don’t get me wrong I love Christmas cookies and all other holiday-related goodies but I also think it’s nice to get something that you don’t need to eat right away.
I also wanted to make something unique that people might not be making for themselves. Since I moved to the South I have heard a lot of people talk about making apple butter. I love apple butter but the only kind I ever knew came from a jar at the grocery store… wow was I missing out! I have been perfecting my apple butter recipe for the last few months and I am excited to share it with you today.
I love this recipe because it takes so little hand-on time – the crockpot does all of the real work and you get the credit! Plus you can make a huge batch for easy gift giving. This recipe is so good that my family eats it straight out of the jar but for more normal people its great on toast, pancakes, and to bake with.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Come say hi at Nel’s Nook some time soon– there is always fun to be had! You can find me on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter too.
Easy homemade apple butter on toast.
Easy Crockpot Apple Butter
Print RecipeIngredients
- 10 large apples cored and sliced (no need to peel)
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ¼ sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon cloves
- 1/8 teaspoon ginger
Instructions
- Put the apples, sugar, and spices into your crockpot and stir to coat the apples. Put the crockpot on low and cook for 10-15 hours, stirring occasionally. The apples should produce enough moisture on their own but if it starts to dry out add a little water or apple juice/cider.
- The mixture will be ready to blend when you stir it and don’t notice big chunks of apple peel and/or when the apple peels rip easily when pulled apart.
- If you have an immersion blender, you can blend the apple mixture directly in the crockpot until smooth.
- If you don’t have an immersion blender, carefully scoop it into a blender and blend until smooth.
- I put mine in mason jars and let them cool on the counter before putting the lid on them and refrigerating them.
Hello, this looks delicious. Do you have an apple preference?
Thank you.
Hi Christy,
Nell replied that she prefers honeycrisp – you really want a good, sweet baking type apple.
Oooo. This looks and sounds delicious. And I love that it’s easy. Just printed the recipe. How long can this keep in the fridge? Thanks so much!
Thanks for your sweet comments!
Christy – I usually use a mix of apples but I stick to the ones that are good for baking. RIght now I have honeycrisp apples cooking. I wouldn’t use something like red delicious or granny smith – I dont think red delicious has as good of flavor as others and granny smith would be way too sour!
Yum Yucky – Mine was in the fridge about 3 weeks before it started to go bad. I haven’t tried it yet but I think it would freeze pretty well too.
II froze mine!! It thawed and still tasted fantastic!!!
I’m so glad to hear that! <3 YAY!
I am about to give this a try. It looks amazing.I can almost taste it.
Does this can well? Thanks!
This is the best apple butter i have ever had! Thanks so much for the recipe!
What size slow cooker did you use for the recipe? We have a 6-qt cooker. Is that too big? I tend to burn things in it if the recipe is smaller.
Hi Kendall,
This was a guest post, so I’m not sure, but I’ve forwarded your question to the author, and I hope to have an answer for you soon!
Have a delicious day!
Rachel
