Put the apples, sugar, and spices into your crockpot and stir to coat the apples. Put the crockpot on low and cook for 10-15 hours, stirring occasionally. The apples should produce enough moisture on their own but if it starts to dry out add a little water or apple juice/cider.
The mixture will be ready to blend when you stir it and don’t notice big chunks of apple peel and/or when the apple peels rip easily when pulled apart.
If you have an immersion blender, you can blend the apple mixture directly in the crockpot until smooth.
If you don’t have an immersion blender, carefully scoop it into a blender and blend until smooth.
I put mine in mason jars and let them cool on the counter before putting the lid on them and refrigerating them.
Notes
This recipe makes about a quart of apple butter. If you want to make more, this recipe is easily doubled or tripled depending on the size of your crockpot. If the apples don’t all fit at the beginning, you can continue to add them as they cook down.
