“What was the best part of your day today?”
That’s what I ask my kids and their friends when I pick them up from school each day.
The answers range from: “It was library day!” to “I sat next to X at lunch today” to “I helped X in PE/Art/Music” to “My teacher smiled at me”
These moments are a part of their every day, yet to me mean so much more.
Those little moments that make up the best part of their day tell me so much about who they are, and what is important to them.
Their answers show me what is important to them, what they cherish, what they focus on, what means the most to them, and most of all — how I can make them feel special.
Every time I ask that question, I get to know my kids a little bit better.
At drop off the other day, as I was getting those last hugs and kisses and telling them any number of things from: “good luck on the test” “have a great day” “I’ll see you after school” “I love you”
I heard one mom say to her daughter as she sent her off: “Spread Joy”
It stopped me. I love that. How simple, yet powerful.
“Spread Joy”
What a wonderful world this would be if we all went into our days with the intention of spreading joy.
Think on a minute, and now I send you off into the world with this.

I like that too. Simple and a good message. I dread the day when my children go to school.. It’s only one year away! Once I get used to it though and get to hear their stories, I’ll feel better. 🙂
I actually have asked mine this since my 15 year old was in 1st grade…and you’re right. It’s so much better than yes or no questions… because it almost forces a dialogue. Love that!

That’s such a wonderful sentiment – so simple, yet so powerful. Also, the focus on doing something that is good for others, not just yourself – though in order to spread joy, you must have joy in the first place, right?
