Today’s recipe comes from me flipping through one of those Cooking Magazines while standing in line at the grocery store. When I came upon this recipe, I drooled profusely and then got out of line, went and picked up pie crusts, Granny Smith Apples and Sour Cream.

You must try this. It is even more delicious than it looks. Seriously. Serve this at Thanksgiving and your family will thank you. Make it for a friend and you’ll have a friend for life.

Sour Cream Apple Pie

Recipe from Pillsbury Magazine: November 2008

Crust
* 1 Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust (from the 15 oz box) soften as directed on box

Filling
* 1 1/4 C Sour Cream
* 3/4 C granulated sugar
* 1/4 C all purpose flour
* 1/4 tsp salt
* 2 tsp vanilla
* 1 egg
* 6 C Granny Smith Apples,peeled, cored and sliced 1/4″ thick. ( I used 6 medium Granny Smith’s)

Topping
* 1/2 C all purpose flour
* 1/2 C chopped walnuts
* 1/4 C granulated sugar
* 1/4 C packed brown sugar
* 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
* dash salt
* 3 Tbsp cold butter

How To

1. Heat oven to 400 F.
2. Place pie crust in a 9″ glass pie plate as directed on the box.
3. In a large bowl, beat all filling ingredients (except apples) together with a wire whisk until well blended.
4. Fold in apples and mix until well coated
5. Pour into the crust lined pie plate

6. Cover the edges of the pie crust with strips of foil to prevent burning.
7. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 F and bake 30 more minutes.
8. While the pie is baking, mix all topping ingredients (except butter). Cut in butter, using a pastry blender or forks, you want the mixture to resemble coarse crumbs; refrigerate until ready to use.
9. Sprinkle the topping over pie; bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown. during the last 5 minutes remove the foil strips to get the crust edges golden brown
10. Cool completely on a cooling rack.

*Rachel’s tweaks: I would add an additional 1/2 C of chopped walnuts to the topping because walnuts rock and the combination of the walnuts, crispy topping, creamy sour cream apples is just too delicious for words. When the pie is fully cooked, switch the setting to broiler and leave the pie in for a few more minutes. This will caramelize the sugars and give you an amazingly awesome tonguegasmically delicious crust that you will fall in love with.

The picture above was taken before I stuck it back in the broiler and after I pulled it out we didn’t let it cool. We just dug into it and then died from the resulting full on tonguegasm. Seriously y’all, this ain’t your ordinary apple pie. You must try it.
Go. Now.

What’s your favorite holiday dessert? Do you try something new every year or stick with the same old favorites?

I’m thinking about making Mouthwatering Monday a Mr. Linky regular feature. Would y’all participate? What do you think?

  1. Yum! I love apple pies but never get up the nerve to make one muself. I might actually attempt this one. Unless you want to make it for me and ship it to TN, just in time for Thanksgiving- just a thought. . .

  2. Just giving you a heads up. During the holiday season, you are going to notice some freak from Kansas at you site for extended page views and periods of time. You are not being stalked. It’s just me, scouring for recipes! This one is first up!

  3. Your timing is perfect. My son had asked for apple pie for Thanksgiving and I have been looking for one that was a little different. This one will be just the thing.

  4. Oh my god. What the hellz, rach… every week you pull something out of your hat that makes me fall over drooling. I LOVE apple pie (or more specifically apple crisp). I could shoot sour cream intravenously (maybe Honeybell could arrange that for me). So these two things together would make me pull a freakin tongue muscle.

  5. I’m going to make that, but instead of eating it I think I’ll just go ahead and attach it directly to my thighs.

  6. This looks awesome and I’m making it for Thanksgiving! Thatnks!!

    I would do a Mr. Linky Mouthwatering Monday.

  7. Must tell you – that one has been a favorite in our family for many years… and it is truly over-the-top wonderful!!!!

  8. Oh good God – that looks delish! Apple pies are my fave – but I’ve never been very successful at making them. I could try that one though – doesn’t look too difficult – and looks too good not to try!
    I love your Mouthwatering Monday’s. I almost always stop by just to be amazed at what a good cook you are and think how lucky your family is (and how my poor family is eating something that’s yet to be determined!)….

  9. It doesn’t taste like sour cream does it? It looks soooo friggin’ good and I can’t wait to try it. But I don’t like sour cream….

  10. Wow — I am bookmarking that one for sure. And definitely making it for Thanksgiving. It looks OUT OF THIS WORLD!

  11. Rachel, you rawk.

    I just copied this recipe, knowing full well how much of a DISASTER I made last week making FRUIT DIP. Yes, three ingredient fruit dip? = BIG MESS in my kitchen. And no, the kids didn’t help. It would have made good blog fodder, but I was too pissed at myself to feel like taking pictures with which to laugh at myself later.

    As much as I LOVE your Mouthwatering Mondays, I don’t think I’d ever have anything to play along with! (But I will come back to keep the inspiration to someday succeed!)

  12. Yeah, that looks awesome! We’ll def be trying it!

    You bought the magazine, right? Ok, Rachel, tell me you didn’t remember all those directions from a flip through…!!!

  13. I made this tonight…. oh my goodness is it wonderful. I think I will repeat it for Thanksgiving. Thanks for the recipe!
