So off we went on our Hurrication, where did we go? We went to the land of Aggies and The Dixie Chicken, and home to my parents: affectionately known as BeBe and Grandpa.

Bebe helped Princess to complete her first ever book order. sigh and sniffle, she’s growing up so fast. Two of the books ordered: Pinkalicious and A Bad Case of The Stripes.

There’s a bell in front of the downtown library that I used to ring as loud as possible about 20 some odd years ago.
Princess happily carries on the tradition.

Monkey helped Bebe shuck corn. He got a huge kick out this whole process, often dipping into the trash can to retrieve the silk and husk to reexamine it with enthusiasm and awe that only a 23 month old (Two on Saturday!!!) can muster. It was quite entertaining for all involved.

For the last nearly 4 1/2 years BeBe has had a little blonde shadow by the name of Princess. Grandpa now has his very own shadow, Monkey.
Monkey stalked followed Grandpa all over the house, mimicked his every movement and damn near twisted himself inside out every time he saw Grandpa. And when Grandpa pulled out his uber cool Banjo and played ‘Dueling Banjos’ well, words cannot describe the dancing, joyous outpouring from my son.

We were so blessed that the hurricane left my house untouched, and that even though we experienced some hellacious rain and impressive winds in Bryan, along with a lovely power outage; our hurrication has left us with only good memories, fun pictures and more family time.

I walked through my parent’s home, sat on the couch reading the Kindle that I abducted borrowed from my generous father and watched my kids run wild through this house. The house that has been the one constant throughout the last 30 years of my life. The house where I spent all my time with my own grandparents. Where I slept, ate, read, played, grew, lived, laughed, loved and cried.
The walls of this house hold thousands of memories; good, bad and otherwise.
I am blessed.
I watched my son play with his grandfather in the very same study where I watched my grandfather hard at work.
I watched both my kids cooking and learning new kitchen skills in the very same kitchen that I learned to cook at my own Granny’s side.
Sleeping in the same rooms, playing in the same yard, eating in the same kitchen and learning about love and family in the very same house that I did.

I am blessed in so many ways, and this hurrication… fed my heart and soothed my soul.

I wish each of you blessings, love, family, peace and happiness.

  1. Awww! That is very sweet – and I love those pictures. Such special moments.

Yeah, I think WE got your hurricane πŸ™‚ Luckily it wasn’t too bad in my suburb of Houston for us though! Whew!

  2. As I was reading your post I thought about all the things I miss with my own grandparents. Thank you for letting me remember some of those memories.

  3. I’m so glad you got a nice break with your parents. It’s wonderful for the kiddos to spend that quality time with them. I’m glad you can see the humor in the evacuation.

  4. Hurricanes suck, but I love that you were able to make the most of the opportunity to spend time with your parents. I bet your kids are going to grow up like AFF and think that hurricanes are fun, and really that’s not a bad thing. It just means some great memories were made.

Here’s to hoping if you ever have another hurrication, it’s just as good (and without injuries and major damage).

  5. Yeah, this is my favorite post of yours yet (not because your house was untouched, PHEW, or the FANTASTIC memories you created) but because it gave you such an awesome perspective and lesson. Love it. And so glad you played PSF, this was excellent Rachel!

  6. What a wonderful story. So glad to hear your home survived and that you had a great “hurrication”! (I love that word!)

  12. How awesome it must have been to see you children run through the memories of your childhood . . . the bell, the yard, the house.

Isn’t it amazing how things come full circle?

I am so happy you are all safe and that your home made it through.

And grandpas and grandmas . . . absolutely priceless (especially with their shadows well intact).

  19. Wow, hurrication…I think I love that word. We’ve were watching and hoping that Ike would take a hike before we left for vacation.

I’m glad your home was spared. We’ve been living in paradise for the last week but every once in awhile we’ve been hearing how Ike left major devastation behind.

I’m hoping this will be it for the hurricane season…the gulf needs a break already.

And that peek a boo picture…ADORABLE.

  20. that is great that you fared so well with the hurricane.
How cool to have your children making their own memories in the same house.

  21. I love the idea of a hurrication- what a great way to make something scary fun!!!! Glad you were safe. I live in the Northwest but was in TX for Ike-we were not in an area that was hit hard but had friends/family who had to evacuate. You are so lucky to live so close to your family! What a treat! Enjoy your many blessings!
