I love making my own seasonings, being able to control the salt, heat, savoriness, sweetness – etc.

Down here in Texas we eat a lot of black beans and steaks, tacos, fajitas, taco salads, nachos, quesadillas, tostadas – so a staple of almost every kitchen I’ve ever been in is Taco Seasoning.Β  You know, those little packets that you dump in, add water and simmer.

Well, over the past year it became one of my challenges to myself to find and perfect a taco seasoning that I could make at home and in doing so, control the amount of salt and preservatives.

Behold one of my new favorite recipes, homemade taco seasoning!

When Nathan and I decided to try The 17 Day Diet one of the things that challenged me was introducing my steak and potatoes boy to new choices like ground turkey and getting him to not only eat it but like it.

My homemade taco seasoning was my secret weapon

Made with Comino – Crushed Red Pepper Flakes – Garlic Powder – Coriander – Oregano and more – this taco seasoning is easy, colorful, delicious and wonderful.

Did I mention ridiculously delicious?

Later this week, I’ll share the Turkey Taco Salad recipe that completely won Nathan over.

For today, y’all are getting the secret to that recipe’s success – my Homemade Taco Seasoning

  3. Ooh, my husband is allergic to MSG and other preservatives, if I make this, he won’t have to suffer any time we make tacos!!! LOL

  4. I just made some recently…after I kept getting “taco” headaches. I realized that the store mixes have MSG….ick! So, I made some on my own, and it tasted a million times better!

I’ll have to try out your spicy recipe.

  5. I’ll be trying this out. I just did this with a rib rub over the summer. Now it’s so easy to pull out the jar of pre-mix, whenever we grill ribs. I’m looking forward to your Turkey Taco Salad, as I’ve been incorporating more ground turkey as well. Have a great week, Rachel!

  6. Awesome! I love the homemade spice mixes because I know EXACTLY what’s in there – and what’s not. It’s taco season in our house… I think I’ll be using this one soon. Thanks, Rachel πŸ™‚

  9. This homemade seasoning just saved my tookus! I’m whipping up some Enchiladas for a freezer meal group, when I realized that I had no seasoning for my meat {gah}. I remembered this post, and quickly put together my own. It worked out fantastic! I’m glad you shared it πŸ™‚

  10. I could no longer live without this taco seasoning! I make double batches. Sometimes I gift it but only a little. I love that I can reduce the salt and it’s still delicious!
