The only way that I can remember how the time change works, is to use the saying I learned in elementary school:

Fall Back … Spring Forward

What about you?  Do you automatically know that the clocks turn back an hour in the Fall and we move them forward an hour in the Spring?

I’ve partnered with Energizer® on their Change Your Clock Change Your Batteries™  campaign to remind you to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors when you change your clock.

smoke - detector

See that little smoke detector up there?  If you’re anything like me, the only time you change the batteries in one of those little suckers is when it starts the chirp… you know the chirp, that little beep that only goes off at 3 A.M., or when the baby is napping, or it emits that bloodcurdling ear splitting wailing when your 6 year old puts a pizza in the oven in the box……… ask me how I know

That lovely little detector up there, and it’s partner in the guest room have given me some interesting moments.  Back when we first moved in to this house… that was the pizza incident, we didn’t have stools, or chairs and that smoke detector was WAILING and WAILING and I couldn’t reach it, so I started beating it with a broom; Nathan was less than amused, so he put Princess on his shoulders and she pushed the shut-up button. << yes, that’s what I call it.

Oh! That reminds me of a funny story.. Cash, our Italian Mastiff, can open the sliding glass door that leads from our patio to my office and into the house.  One day, not long after we moved in, I came home from running errands, and kept hearing a chirping sound, I checked each smoke detector… nope, not them.

chirp – chirp – chirp – chirp

I was confused, and getting a little annoyed…

Here’s the fun part.

See if you can get there before I do.

I left the dogs in the backyard when I went to run my errands, Cash opened the door and hadn’t closed it.

There was a BIRD in my office, y’all! A BIRD! A real live bird!  It was perched on my desk looking out the window chirping at its friends!!!!

I’m so glad nobody was around to video my squeals, and my subsequent capturing of the bird with a pillowcase.  I released him/her/it into the backyard, and then called Nathan, shaking and laughing.

Fun times, y’all.

The object of the Change Your Clock Change Your Batteries  program is to have you associate the time change with changing the batteries in these life saving devices.  This will also save you from the hunt for the chirp, and will make sure your detectors are working when you need them.

This takes maybe 15 minutes, depending on how high your ceilings are and how many you have in your home.

While I was doing some research and reading up on the info that Energizer® sent to me for our partnership, I came across this startling bit of information:

  • The growing number of smart devices that keep us safe, secure and comfortable at home are only as good as the batteries that power them. Despite the fact that an increasing number of homes have smoke alarms and smoke detectors, the National Fire Protection Association reports that 71% of smoke alarms which failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries.* This reinforces how important it is to take this time each year to check these safety devices.

My friend, you might recognize him

He wanted to tell you a couple bits of information, too:

  • For 29 years, the Energizer® brand has partnered with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) to help keep families safe through the Change Your Clock Change Your Batteries™ program. Every fall, Energizer® and the IAFC work to remind people of the simple, life-saving habit of changing and testing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, along with all of your home safety devices, when setting the clocks back for daylight saving time.
    •       Home safety and security has evolved beyond smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Many families rely on other home devices connected to the Internet or their smartphones, also known as the Internet of Things, to enhance safety and security. Energizer provides smart energy for smart devices with a variety of battery sizes and products across our portfolio that power these connected home devices.
