  9. For whatever it’s worth I can say that I have been there…in the hospital….trying to find those last words, trying to imprint the feeling of his still-warm hand into my permanent memory. Grabbing at his hair brush (why he had that I have no idea – he had no hair by then!) so I don’t forget his smell. Trying to hold onto whatever I could – even though I knew he was going, then gone. Then a huge gaping hole in my heart that felt like it was tearing my chest apart.

But somehow we survive even that deepest pain. I remember feeling a bit of relief that I didn’t have to worry about the worst happening – because it had just happened. I no longer had to be sick with worry. I just had to mourn. And 8 years later (it will be 8 years in just a few weeks) I can look at photos and share stories without crying…most of the time. But I remember being right where you are. So know that you aren’t alone.

  16. Oh my I am so sorry! I remember reading your post awhile back when you let us know about his cancer battle. That photo of your mother in law holding him in her arms with his head on her chest just gets me everytime. That’s beautiful love right there. I’m so sorry he is gone, but I’m sure you are also so glad to have had him. I pray for you and your family during this time and that in time your broken heart heals. Oh and I love that second to last photo of the two of them in red. Why must we lose those we love? Praying for you!
